%groups v8.0.0
~2025.08.12 Major Release
Summary
This release upgrades the %groups agent for more reliable delivery and redemption of group invitations. This release contains a protocol change, which may cause temporary breakages with group preview data and existing invitations. Read the “Breaking Changes” section for more details.
What's Changed
- Adds a “token” to all group invitations that grant the invitee a perpetual key to join the group, even if the group privacy changes.
- Refactors the %groups agent for better developer ergonomics and reliability.
- Improves the in-channel experience when an administrator changes channel permissions or roles.
Breaking Changes
Because this update contains a protocol change, until we release, there will be breakages that non-upgraded ships will experience:
- All existing group previews stop working and will refresh only after both parties upgrade. These are most visible in group references and others’ profiles (“Favorite Groups”).
- Pre-existing private and secret group invitations may fail after migration. You may need to request new invitations from upgraded hosts after the OTA propagates.
- Any groups you host will float to the top of your Groups list (native app Home tab, web app sidebar), then re-order naturally as more activity flows in.
You will still be able to communicate in existing channels and DMs until both parties upgrade.
